This article is the part of series which discuss the Venture Design. I hope that passing this knowledge will help you, who want to create the culture of innovation in a core in your venture. This will prepare you to test any idea encounter in team, and help you to either take it or leave it.
In startups, there will be 1000s of ideas which make you feel exciting while you’re thinking. But more than 90% of those idea failed when it come for implementation. Either you lost somewhere while doing it, or you lack to prioritize. You basically missed the storyline to develop.
In startup, it’s very common many of founders used to say that they are launching new product or feature in end of month, and very few of them succeed to do it. For the scope they are looking, they compromise the timelines.
As a part of game, A founder need to make the plan for years and some time for multiple years, to make the pitch to your investors and stakeholders. But frankly, it is waste of time, and very impossible to predict something like it. You hardly achieve your monthly goals. It is not the numbers you predict will make your startups success. The way you can do is by executing the ideas, taking feedbacks, iterating on those ideas, and taking small decisions.
How can you do it?
The best methodology for startups is one who has cross functional team involved in project, who adopt the shared vision and flexible to change if required, think a project to execute on incremental process, and always doing testing, taking feedback and change it.
Once everyone in your team understand this methodology, the things will systematic, everyone know what to expect, and how the output can be measure.
The few questions are:
What are the tasks need to be done?
What is the priority of each task?
What is the deadline for each task?
Who is doing this task?
If everyone in the team knows the answer of these questions, the process will be aligned to the bigger goals.
As the outcome of these tasks, you have ability to make quick decisions, get quick feedbacks, quick releases. You don’t need to wait for month or years to know if it works.
Problem Scenario is the area where you get chance to understand the problems of the personas in your area of interest, and you will able to find some specific objectives for your product/service, this will be something you will deliver for your customers. But the issues might be you are not the one who try to deliver the solution, your persona might have already found some solution for it, so you need to understand the existing alternatives. You have to understand, if there is the problem, you customer is doing something about it. It’s very important you know about it and you have to plan better proposition for them.
We can use this Problem Scenario, Alternatives and Value Proposition techniques which will be actionable and testable. Which will help us to make discussion on what problem exist and important to solve, we can discuss about how can we make solution relevant to customers. There might be multiple problem scenario but you can prioritize it, you will look on the alternatives they are using right now (which means how they are solving the problems now if there any). Its recommended that working on problem scenarios and alternatives are less costly than finding the proposition. You don’t need to spend time and money to build anything to find the answer about problem scenarios and alternatives. The only thing you need to do is observe and study your persona. That’s the reason you need to work hard on making good persona.
I used the example of taxi driver to make persona, now we will try to work on problem scenario, alternatives and value propositions using that example.
I need to waste lots of time in a day to find the customers,
Capture the main junctions, but sometime there are already many taxi taking those spots
Mobile application which gives notification if any customer nearby looking for taxi.
Now you can say for the taxi driver like Sanu Lama, who have to waste the time and fuel every day to find the customers where they more like to get certain in junction road but many time those spots are not available and I have mobile solution where you can get notification when there is any customer looking for taxi
The big question is how better is my proposed value proposition than existing alternatives, is it enough for Sanu Lama to join my platform?
I believe this is the common issue. Either you are planning for new startups or you are thinking to scale your business, you have probably gone through this phase. There are actually many ways to kick off, but you don’t want to waste your time and money and leading you for uncertainty and deadlocks. I have faced such situation many times, where I realized mistakes after spending so many time and money.
After many unsuccessful attempts, now I feel the best approach is to start with understanding the customer first. If you don’t have good understanding about the customer, everything you will do can lead into uncertainty. It’s like you are trying to build tower on weak foundation.
You can make good product or service, when you understand your customer very well and you know what matters to them most. For this you can start from creating personas.
Personas are the characters (in many cases it is hypothetical) you created to represent the different type of users, that might use your product/service or make influence to use it. The persona will help you to understand what they think, see, feel and do. This will help you to understand your user’s need, experience and behavior.
When we start making persona, we often spending too much time trying to make it perfect. But we need to understand the questions you will need to answer with personas will be change with time and evolving, which will change the understanding of persona too.
There are few fundamental elements that make persona better.
They should have name, it will easy to recall and make the persona live.
Example: Sanu Lama, the taxi driver
To understand if the persona is relevant to your product/service, you can start with asking screening question. This will help you to make sure your persona is adequately specific.
Example: For Sanu Lama, the screening question can be “How many trips you have done in average 8 hours a day for last 3 months”
The general information about persona, that is like the detail introduction which give the idea about the person. You can try to write about “who are they”, “What make the do that job”. It will better if you have picture of him/her.
Sanu Lama is a part time taxi driver. He has been driving a taxi for 2+ years but he takes it on daily rent from the taxi owner, where he needs to pay 10 USD every day for driving 10 hours . Everyday, He takes his taxi around 6 AM morning from the owner’s home and returns it back at 4 PM. After he returns back, there is another driver like him who takes the next 10 hours who pays the same amount. He is unmarried and lives with friends, they have rented an apartment. He earns 25-30 USD every day, but spends 5-7 USD on fuel and food. So he saves 8 to 13 USD for him. He is a student studying bachelor degree and this profession helps him to pay fees for his college. Sanu doesn’t love his job but this is important for him to survive. He doesn’t like this profession because he think this job doesn’t have much respect in society. He also doesn’t stay in a specific area and waits for customers to come rather he goes to search for customers. He has faced a few bad incidents; some customers ran away without paying money. But he also found many generous customers who pay good tips when they are happy with service. Sanu has a good smartphone, and he has a 4G network. He uses facebook and watches youtube when he feels bored, he chats with friends and family. He has downloaded ridesharing app and like it very much, he gives priority to the customer from ridesharing app, the customers from ridesharing app are usually nice and he earns better income from the app. He thinks app can be better, sometimes he needs to go far to pick up but customer cancel while he is on the way to pick up.
You should understand Persona is the design tools, which means it should be useful to get your job done. You should be able to find the answer of question you are looking. I usually try to use the approach of “Think, See, Feel Do”
He knows this is not going to be a long term career but it’s good for now, he has flexibility and enough earnings for him for now. He thinks ridesharing business will take the lead in future, because many customers likes ridesharing app.
He sees some drivers are doing more trips and earn good money using ridesharing apps.
He feels the market will lead by ridesharing in few years, so the drivers who want to learn something new about technology and customer service will earn money.
Sanu generally does 5-6 trips a day, He earns 200-300 USD a month.
Think: What do they think about your area of interest? What’s the tension between how things are now vs. how they’d like them? See: How did they get to that ‘Think’? What people or sources of information influence them (in your area of interest)? Feel: How do they feel about your the area in question? After doing it/experiencing it, how are they likely t0 feel? Do: How often do they do it? How much do they spend (time and/or money)? When and why?
Well this is not complete but from here you can start your other steps. You will carry persona in whole process further.

Well, this is the big concern for the students who take decision them selves. I know you came here to get some honest anwer so that it will help you to decide if you can go for it.
My suggestion for you:
Before you go for kind of jobs you are expecting, You should understand BSC CSIT is acedemic degree which give you strong fundamental knowledge about Computer Science and Technology. This is like the algebra and simplification you studied in Math in your school life. Use this fundamental knowledge, you can solve bigger problem. Here my point is you will learn lots of things which will give you confident and freedom to choose the career you like
Area of Scopes can be categorised in different dimensions. One of the area is : Core Technical Area (You can be good software Developer, Network Administration, Database Administration, System Administration, Designer, Security Expert and other technical skill person) Hybrid Technical Area(System Analysis Expert, SEO, Social Media Expert, Quality Assurance ) and non tech (Teacher/Instructor, Policy Practitioner, Internet Activist, Researcher )
You are not limited to doing job, There is the interesting trend students are doing their own startups and giving job to others
The scope is limitless but you have to cope with other skills like communication, presentation, group work and many other things.
I can understand you have questions in your mind regarding entrance preparation of BSCCSIT. You see lots of people are preparing for Medical, Engineering, CMAT and other. There are lots of preparation center for such course. As BSC CSIT is the new course, there are not enough center to provide you preparation class, or you may not see such competitive examination worth to prepare.
In my previous blog, I also mention you don’t need to worry because most of the CSIT college also provided free entrance preparation class which may create doubt for you if that is for attracting you on particular college.
But in this blog, I am going to suggest you for entrance preparation. And I will explain why and how.
It has been already 9 years of starting BSCCSIT, I saw lots of changes on the behavior and competition. Last year more than 3000 students were on competition which is more number than the total number of seat all over the Nepal. And my assumption is it will grow this year. So you have to get higher score to make your higher chance to get admission.
If you want to get admission on your choice of college, then the score is important. For Example, If you are looking at Amrit Campus for admission. You should be top 60 scorer to have the default choice, they publish namelist on the base of merit list.
If you are looking for scholarship, Most college provide it to top scorer. You can have that chance if you score high.
But all these things are obvious and I assume you know it already. But what I worried is your preparedness for 4 yrs course and career than just entrance exam. So My point is don’t just look for entrance exam, look beyond it.
BSCCSIT is the technical course, I see lots of student suffer from not having confident of being use to of Computer Technology. If you are not very good with computer, I suggest you to learn basic computer ideas. Practice as much you can. Which will make you enjoying working on computer. I am sure this will help you to get interesting in class and lab on first semester.
If you are already good with computer, you know how to use it. I suggest you should scale your knowledge in more computer science things. What I suggest is if possible start learning about logical thinking, basic programming knowledge, computer networking and other things which is very applicable for 4 yrs of study and your career.
I also suggest you to start exploring about more IT development in INTERNET, You can start following site like Mashable, The Next Web, Tech Crunch. You should start learn about new development in youtube, which will expand your knowledge beyond the class and beyond the book.
Start participate on local IT events, I know you will not understand everything. But you can see the energy and enthusiasm on IT professionals and students, which will better prepare for future.
Now you might have the simple question, where can I learn all these things. And the answer is nowhere for now. I am consulting with BSCCSIT.COM to build up such course to implement in this year. But need to see how it comes. To be honest, it will experiment but I am sure if there is equal energy from Learner, Trainer and Facilitator it is achievable.
There is India, Philippines and Brazil who has been remarkable for outsoursing destination for IT jobs. They have huge number of people working in companies, infrastructure and resources. But when you have to think about Nepal, you might ask lots of questions, Here is the answers why i suggest Nepal is also the one of the best choice for people like you.
Nepal is in between two big, powerful nation like China and India. Being a small and independent country, Nepal is always success to keep the indentity and able to take the support from both nation. Nepal is also trying to be the bridge of China and India
2. Best Value
We are blessed with Natural resouces. People know Nepal because of Mt. Everest, lakes, rivers, and many other beautiful things. But we Nepalese more proud on making our place safe for endangered animals. We know what is the exact value of things we have.
3. Best Humanity
Everyone faced disaster, but more than worries about how to recover wealth and business, We are always reach to the place where we can rescue lives. People of Nepal are kind hearted, People come first than other things.
4. Best Professionalism
When the most valuable assets(Heritage) destroyed in Earthquake in every 100 years, The Artist from same generation come first to restore it to give it back the original faith. You get what you are expecting and support is like for generation.
Beside all these things, we also give other competitive benefits.
Diverse Technology Adaptation
Strong Community Support
The usual nature of Tourism sector is supported by multi stakeholders. Travel become exciting because of balance sequence and mixture of different service and probably from different service provider. Now technology has played important role to connect and cover all these things in easy and single platform.
This is the age of technology, technology play the very crucial role to inspire people to travel specific place/destination. It fuel to make the dream to do some activities in life. People get such inspiration from Social Media, News, Movie, TV shows and many other mediums. Once people decide to travel, they need to make plan for it. So here again Technology become important. Most people now a days book online.
Even while people travel they use social media to share their experience, also need apps to navigate and learn more information. It’s not going to stop here, People use technology even after they back from trip. Some people start reviewing in different platform and some start writing blogs.
Because of this, there are lots of disruption happening in tourism sector.
In 2014 and 2015 Globally, There has been lots of innovation happened in Travel Sector.
As the result in 2015
– No of tourists travel in developing countries are higher than Developed countries
– Airbnb took 1.5 billion USD investment and industry took more than 5 billion USD funding this year only.
– Government has changed the policy due to new disruption in industry by technology. Now think,
What new happened in Tourism sector of Nepal in 2015?
I don’t see anything, but I saw lots of people trying. 100 of new brilliant ideas were proposed in NCELL APP CAMP this year.
Why these Global development is not making significant contribution in Nepal?
Do you know Nepal is missing in Global Distribution System of Travel Services?
Do you know we lack the system that connect different services? Only manually things happen here.
We need the basic technical infrastructure which aims to connect different travel services in Nepal, which on the top everything we expecting as new can happen. This infrastructure is the connection of multiple small service.
Today Number of people traveling to developing country is bigger than developed country. If we see the trends, the reason of why people are traveling is completely different than yesterday. People want to spend some of their time in different locality where they never been, want to be part of different culture and tradition. They want to see how art is working in local communities, they want to learn how local food can cook. they also want to teach in schools and want to support what they need.
If we see the industry, Only few established tourism company is serving, and the fact is they only can’t handle this business. Good accommodation is not enough to facilitate tourist, Theywant to live in homestay also. You can’t say Mt. Everest is only enough to bring tourist in Nepal. Tourist want to see our jatra, our festival, They want to travel to small village in Lalitpur and want to plan a rice with local farmers.
All these point here to justify, Tourism is no more limited to few entity. Government can play vital role to develop infrastructures to support it, International agencies can play important role to make the competent environment, private sector is selling it to tourist, local people are serving. Every sector can contribute and earn from it. Think about School, Hospital, Transportation, local shops, local restaurant can easily facilitate the ecosystem.
There used to be the time, when Tourist confirm their itinerary before starting travel. They used to spends month to plan on everything. But today, people like to do instantly. They use google and travel portal to find what is good for today, and book instantly without talking with anyone. If you are good with technology, you can be there to connect travellers to service providers. You can be the one to suggest them what is good for them.
The benefits of tourism is wide. Tourism share our valuable cultural and environmental treasures with everyone. It make us able to share skills. It also produce lots of job.
There are lots of things that nation has to do to prepare for preventing from loss that might occurred from disaster. In only very few cases, Government can know when it happens. Disaster cause massive loss of resources, infrastructures, lives and property but not limited with tangible things, it destroy the image of that place which marked as No Go Zone. Which impacted long last, and it can’t be restored by funding/donation support you get from anywhere.
In April 25, We faced 7.8 magnitude of Earthquake, which became the massive devastation of losing more than 8000 lives and damaged more than 300000 houses. People live with after-shock for few next months. Because of that, Nepal was the subject of news for all kind of media. The pictures showing the worst situation and pain of people were on social media and internet for collecting the support for the needy people. Media and INGOs plays important role to gain support and grief which was kind of important things for rescue and restoration. But it was not helping eventually for long run, People recognized Nepal for big earthquake.
Country, which has important role in GDP of tourism sector has immersed with No Go Zone. It seems affected when we realized there was huge downfall on number of tourist who were coming to Nepal, although nation was back to normal life. We dig into some fact and we found, Our image has been quite changed and people still used to see us as same devastated image.
We agreed, We need the program and activities which will change the perspective of people from outside. We need to rebuild the trust of world as much as before. It was not easy, now we have to fight with all the established international media and powerful INGO to show how much we are right.
The idea we came with was, Creating the online platform which will be official statement about the status of place/destination after earthquake and the story of travellers who are coming in Nepal after earthquake. We knew that people will not completely believe on us if we just say Nepal is safe to Visit. They need proof, and the best evidence can be personal stories of one of them and picture. It was not just an idea which sounds well but the team that was formed from cross sector. It was combination of Government and Private Sector supported by International Agencies. We named it www.nepalnow.org
One of the famous campaign of for NepalNow was “I AM IN NEPAL NOW” people taking selfie with playcard. The idea was adopted by industry, they asked their customer to do selfie and share in their social media with #nepalnow hashtag. So that their friend can see that their friends are enjoying their holiday in Nepal. There were also few other campaigns which seems interesting like “I WISH I WAS IN NEPAL NOW” and “I AM GOING TO NEPAL NOW”
This is one of the actions we took after crises, It doesn’t means its only way, there were lots of effort by individual people, communities and government to revive it for another life. But I learn one lessons, everyone should do something, Crises unite everyone, it teaches how you should fight. And the end it will make you more confident to do better than yesterday.
